Your course choice is a visa decision, not just an education one
It is tempting to pick a course on reputation alone, but for a subclass 500 the choice ripples through everything — your budget, your Genuine Student case, your work rights and even your longer-term options in Australia. It pays to choose deliberately.
Start with CRICOS registration
You can only be granted a student visa for a course registered on CRICOS. That covers a wide range — English language (ELICOS), vocational education (VET), and undergraduate, postgraduate and research degrees — so the first filter is simply: is this exact course, at this exact provider, CRICOS-registered?
Match the course to a genuine story
Under the Genuine Student requirement, your course should make sense given your background and goals. A course that looks like a sideways or backwards step from your existing qualifications invites scrutiny. Choosing a course with a logical progression makes your whole application more credible.
Weigh cost, location and outcomes together
Tuition and city living costs vary enormously, and they feed straight into your financial capacity evidence. Balance the course fee against the living cost of the city, the provider's standing in your field, and the practical outcomes — graduate employment, professional accreditation and any later pathways to permanent residence.
Be aware of capacity limits
Australia now manages international student numbers through planning limits, which can affect available places at particular providers and courses in a given intake. Applying early and having a sensible second option protects you if your first choice fills.
